Citizenship

Elmhurst Immigration Law offers the following citizenship-related services:

  1. Naturalization

This is the process by which an individual acquires citizenship of a country which s/he did not have citizenship to at birth. The duties bestowed by citizenship are well-known, such as the duty to serve on a jury if summoned. But little is known of the countless benefits conferred by U.S. citizenship, such as shorter wait times for family members’ green cards, the ability to remain out of the U.S. for lengthy time periods without jeopardizing one’s status, immunity from deportation due to criminal acts, the right to vote, and the right to hold certain jobs. These benefits make naturalization a worthwhile consideration. There are certain requirements, such as age, residency, physical presence, and good moral character.

  1. Application for Certificate of Citizenship

This is a method of documenting U.S. citizenship status based on citizen parentage. It is typically available to individuals who are (1) born outside the U.S. to U.S. citizen parent/s, or (2) born outside of the U.S. to parent/s who became U.S. citizens via naturalization.
